Topic 4: The Conservative Net Asset Value (CNAV) Approach to Stock Picking
Most investors under-perform the index by picking their own stocks. In order to beat the market, we must first understand where the inefficiencies are and whether we are able to exploit them. The market structure tells us that funds and investors favour well known big cap stocks, and stocks with good earnings. The attention on these stocks result in premium pricing and at the same time, small cap stocks which are neglected are priced cheaply. This imbalance of attention creates inefficiencies and opportunities. Like in a flea market, we need to pick out the good small cap stocks from the bad ones, and the CNAV approach is a very useful tool to do just that.
